Community Investment

TransAlta seeks to invest in communities where we can have meaningful impact and enhance the quality of life where our employees work and live. Our investments fill a recognized need and build the sustainability of the communities where we operate.

Along with in-kind assistance, TransAlta has identified three Community Investment Pillars which we are committed to supporting:

TransAlta Women in Trades Scholarship

TransAlta is proud to announce our Women in Trades Scholarship, designed to encourage and assist women in obtaining post-secondary industrial trades education.

TransAlta Performing Arts Studio

In 2017, TransAlta, along with the Calgary Stampede Foundation, proudly unveiled the TransAlta Performing Arts Studio at Stampede Park. The 13,000 square-foot studio was designed to provide Calgary’s youth a year-round facility to rehearse, train and celebrate the arts. Open to both Calgary Stampede Foundation programming and Calgary’s youth performing arts groups, the TransAlta Performing Arts Studio will promote youth achievement and the community for years to come.

TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre
We are a proud founding sponsor of the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre, a sporting and recreation destination for many active and involved residents from the communities of Parkland County, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain in Alberta. At the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre, thousands of local residents, and many of our employees, participate in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities and join together in many community causes.
United Way
The United Way provides TransAlta employees and retirees the opportunity to strengthen their communities and support those most in need. Each year, our employees engage in United Way fundraising activities and volunteer initiatives, and the company donates funds to United Ways across Canada and in the United States topping-up generous employee and retiree donations.

Education

TransAlta (through the Centralia Coal Transition Board) invested $1.3 million in the Southwest Washington Flexible Training (SWFT) Center, located at the Centralia College campus. The center, a 12,000 square foot facility will expand the college’s ability to train-on-demand in response and in anticipation of industry needs.

Dr. Bob Mohrbacher, President of Centralia College indicates “This new facility gives Centralia College the ability to extend our existing partnerships with local industry, with potential new employers coming to the area, and with area high schools. We can build up the local workforce and respond quickly to new training needs.”

Environment

TransAlta (through Centralia Coal Transition Board) partners with the Lewis County Public Utility District for a multi-year funded approach to energy efficiency and cost savings for customers. The investment of $1.2 million will support low-income, ductless heat pumps and weatherization upgrades, school energy efficiency improvements and community based non-profit energy efficiency measures.

“This grant award will allow us to serve a large number of additional low-income households with space heating/cooling and weatherization efficiency measures that will save customers money through reduced energy consumption and improve overall quality of life for many years to come,” said Matt Samuelson, Power Supply Manager for Lewis County Public Utility District. “Further, we are excited to continue our partnership with K-12 schools to modernize their facilities in ways that result in large-scale energy efficiency improvements and associated cost savings.”

Community Health & Wellness

TransAlta (through the Centralia Coal Transition Board) supported local community COVID-19 relief efforts in the production and delivery of large quantities of hand and surface sanitizer with the investment of $63,000 to Sandstone Distillery to repurpose a 3,000 gallon copper vessel that was slated for decommissioning and eventual scrap, affectionately known as “Gabe.” The owners of Sandstone Distillery worked with the community and decided to take all spirits production offline and dedicate all available resources to the production of the FDA/WHO approved sanitizer. Sandstone is currently providing hand sanitizer for hundreds of nursing care facilities and in-home nursing providers, local medical clinics and hospitals and first responders from Oregon to the Canadian border. With TransAlta’s investment, hand sanitizer has been distributed at no cost to small business, schools, the local Chamber, first responders and others in need.

Australia

HeartKids

TransAlta is a proud supporter of HeartKids, the only Australian not-for-profit organization focused solely on supporting and advocating for all people impacted by childhood onset heart disease – the largest cause of infant death in Australia. HeartKids’ purpose is to help these infants, and their families lead the most fulfilling life possible and to reach their personal goals.

TransAlta has supported numerous HeartKids appeals, including its Charity Bike Build For Kids programs and its annual Two Feet & A Heartbeat charity walk.

Foodbank

Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organization, operating on a scale that makes it crucial to the work of the frontline charities who are feeding vulnerable Australians. Foodbank provides more than 70 per cent of the food rescued for food relief organizations Australia-wide.

TransAlta has proudly supported numerous Foodbank appeals, including its Empty Shelves Appeal and its Uncancel Christmas program, which put Christmas back on the table for thousands of children going without.

Leinster Community Day Care Centre

The Leinster Community Day Care Centre has been providing services to the community of Leinster for over 30 years. The centre aims to function as an extended family to provide each child with security, warmth and love which are essential for a child’s development and growth.

TransAlta continues to provide funding for various expansions of the centre, including funding grants for outdoor equipment and play facilities.

Royal Flying Doctor Service

Established in 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organizations in the world, providing extensive primary healthcare and 24-hour emergency services to people that live, work and travel across rural and remote Australia.

TransAlta provides financial support to assist the Royal Flying Doctor Service with its ongoing operations in Western Australia.
