TransAlta Women in Trades Scholarship

TransAlta (through Centralia Coal Transition Board) partners with the Lewis County Public Utility District for a multi-year funded approach to energy efficiency and cost savings for customers. The investment of $1.2 million will support low-income, ductless heat pumps and weatherization upgrades, school energy efficiency improvements and community based non-profit energy efficiency measures. 

“This grant award will allow us to serve a large number of additional low-income households with space heating/cooling and weatherization efficiency measures that will save customers money through reduced energy consumption and improve overall quality of life for many years to come,” said Matt Samuelson, Power Supply Manager for Lewis County Public Utility District. “Further, we are excited to continue our partnership with K-12 schools to modernize their facilities in ways that result in large-scale energy efficiency improvements and associated cost savings.”

TransAlta (through the Centralia Coal Transition Board) supported local community COVID-19 relief efforts in the production and delivery of large quantities of hand and surface sanitizer with the investment of $63,000 to Sandstone Distillery to repurpose a 3,000 gallon copper vessel that was slated for decommissioning and eventual scrap, affectionately known as “Gabe.” The owners of Sandstone Distillery worked with the community and decided to take all spirits production offline and dedicate all available resources to the production of the FDA/WHO approved sanitizer. Sandstone is currently providing hand sanitizer for hundreds of nursing care facilities and in-home nursing providers, local medical clinics and hospitals and first responders from Oregon to the Canadian border. With TransAlta’s investment, hand sanitizer has been distributed at no cost to small business, schools, the local Chamber, first responders and others in need.

Foodbank is Australia’s largest food relief organization, operating on a scale that makes it crucial to the work of the frontline charities who are feeding vulnerable Australians. Foodbank provides more than 70 per cent of the food rescued for food relief organizations Australia-wide.

TransAlta has proudly supported numerous Foodbank appeals, including its Empty Shelves Appeal and its Uncancel Christmas program, which put Christmas back on the table for thousands of children going without.

The Leinster Community Day Care Centre has been providing services to the community of Leinster for over 30 years. The centre aims to function as an extended family to provide each child with security, warmth and love which are essential for a child’s development and growth.

TransAlta continues to provide funding for various expansions of the centre, including funding grants for outdoor equipment and play facilities.

Established in 1928, the Royal Flying Doctor Service is one of the largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organizations in the world, providing extensive primary healthcare and 24-hour emergency services to people that live, work and travel across rural and remote Australia.

TransAlta provides financial support to assist the Royal Flying Doctor Service with its ongoing operations in Western Australia.
