Canada

Our beginnings started in Alberta over 100 years ago. Today, we stretch across the country providing the electricity Canadians need every day.

Our Story

We continue to invest in energy technologies that advance the responsible use of our resources and we are transitioning our coal facilities to natural gas as part of our energy mix. Our commitment to re-positioning coal continues as we decommission our oldest coal plants in Alberta and retro-fit some of them to run on natural gas.

With our emphasis on renewable sources of energy, we operate hydro sites in Alberta and Ontario and have expanded our hydro capacity in British Columbia with the 19 MW Bone Creek facility.

TransAlta is also Canada’s largest producer of wind energy with sites in Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, and we continue to expand development of this fuel source.

Community Investment

We seek to invest in communities where we can have meaningful impact and enhance the quality of life where our employees work and live.

TransAlta Canada’s community investment partnerships include:

  • TransAlta Performing Arts Studio. In partnership with the Calgary Stampede Foundation, we unveiled the 13,000 square-foot studio in 2017 designed to provide Calgary’s youth a year-round facility to rehearse, train and celebrate the arts.
  • POWER (Projects Organized with Energetic Retirees). A group of dedicated and energetic TransAlta retirees and their partners who strive to improve the quality of life in communities through volunteerism.
  • TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre. We are a proud founding sponsor of the TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre, a sporting and recreation destination for the residents of Parkland County, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain communities.
  • The United Way. Providing TransAlta employees and retirees the opportunity to strengthen their communities and support those most in need.
